The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was introduced in April 1955 as the replacement for the Silver Dawn, serving as the core model of the manufacturer's lineup. It featured a robust welded steel chassis with a standard steel body built by Pressed Steel, although specialized coachbuilders like H. J. Mulliner, Park Ward, James Young, and Freestone & Webb offered bespoke coupe and drophead coupe configurations. It was powered by a 4.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine featuring overhead inlet and side exhaust valves with twin SU carburetors, mated to a standard four-speed General Motors Hydra-Matic automatic transmission manufactured under license. Front suspension utilized independent coil springs with wishbones, while the rear featured a rigid live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and electrically adjustable hydraulic dampers. In 1957, a long-wheelbase variant extended by four inches was introduced, alongside optional power-assisted steering and factory air conditioning. The Silver Cloud was actively exported to major markets across North America, Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom, defining mid-century British automotive luxury.
