Unveiled in 1950, the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV is the rarest and most exclusive generation in the marque's history, with only 18 examples manufactured between 1950 and 1956 strictly for reigning monarchs and heads of state. The first chassis was commissioned by Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II. Built upon an elongated, reinforced cruciform chassis derived from the Silver Wraith, the Phantom IV featured independent coil-spring front suspension and semi-elliptic rear leaf springs. It stands as the only production Rolls-Royce to be equipped with a straight-eight engine (from the robust B-series range), initially displacing 5.7 litres and later enlarged to 6.5 litres. The engine was tuned to allow prolonged driving at walking pace during royal processions without overheating. Early examples featured a four-speed manual transmission, while later chassis adopted a four-speed GM Hydra-Matic automatic. Handcrafted exclusively by elite coachbuilders like H.J. Mulliner and Hooper, each Phantom IV was a bespoke imperial state limousine of unmatched prestige.
