Pontiac Tempest I (Y-body) gallery (1961–1963)

The first generation of the compact car with an innovative layout was built on the Y-body platform and featured a rear transaxle layout.

The first generation Pontiac Tempest debuted for the 1961 model year as a compact car on the unibody Y-body platform, shared with the Buick Special and Oldsmobile F-85. The car featured a unique layout with a rear-mounted transaxle, four-wheel independent suspension, and a flexible drive shaft enclosed in a torque tube, which allowed for a flat floor inside. The body styles included a sedan, coupe, station wagon, and a convertible introduced in 1962. The engine lineup consisted of a slant-four Trophy 4 engine, which was essentially half of a Pontiac V8, as well as rare aluminum V8 options. The vehicle was manufactured in the United States and primarily marketed in North America, laying the groundwork for the brand's future mid-size models.
