Pontiac Tempest II (A-body) gallery (1964–1967)

The second generation switched to the classic frame-based A-body platform and grew in size, becoming a full-fledged mid-size car.

In 1964, the Pontiac Tempest underwent a radical redesign: the car switched to the new mid-size General Motors A-body frame platform with a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, abandoning the complex rear transaxle scheme. The body style lineup expanded with a hardtop, alongside the continuing sedan, coupe, station wagon, and convertible. Based on this model, the famous GTO performance package was introduced in 1964, which soon became a separate model family. The engine range expanded with inline-six engines and classic overhead-valve V8s displacing up to 6.5 liters, paired with manual and automatic transmissions. In 1967, safety features were improved with an energy-absorbing steering column. The primary markets remained the United States and Canada.
