172About this generation
The fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder replaced its body-on-frame construction with a unibody design, transforming into a comfortable three-row family crossover.
Introduced in 2012, the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder (codenamed R52) marked a radical shift in the model's concept. Instead of the previous body-on-frame architecture, the vehicle adopted a unibody structure based on the front-wheel-drive Nissan D platform, shared with the Infiniti JX35 (later QX60) and Nissan Murano. The five-door body grew longer and wider than its predecessor, offering a spacious seven-seat, three-row interior with the EZ Flex second-row seating system, while significantly reducing curb weight. The primary powertrain was a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated VQ35DE V6 engine paired with an Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), while a hybrid variant featuring a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor was also offered in select markets. Customers could choose between front-wheel drive and the intelligent All-Mode 4x4-i system. For the 2017 model year (debuting in 2016), the R52 underwent a comprehensive facelift that brought revised bumpers, updated lighting, a more pronounced V-Motion grille, retuned suspension, and an upgraded VQ35DD V6 engine with direct injection for increased power and towing capacity. The R52 Pathfinder was primarily marketed in North America, Australia, the Middle East, and Russia.
