About this generation

The second-generation Nissan Leaf (ZE1) adopted a sharper, more conventional exterior design alongside significantly increased power, driving range, and advanced driver-assistance technologies.

Unveiled in late 2017, the second-generation Nissan Leaf (internal code ZE1) retained the core platform structure and 2,700 mm wheelbase of its predecessor while undergoing a comprehensive visual and technological transformation. Offered exclusively as a five-door hatchback, the ZE1 replaced the quirky, bulbous styling of the original ZE0 with sleek, mainstream proportions incorporating Nissan's signature V-Motion front grille motif, a floating roof design, and improved aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, the cabin was thoroughly redesigned with a more ergonomic dashboard layout, higher-grade materials, and updated infotainment displays. Under the hood, the upgraded EM57 synchronous electric motor saw output rise to 110 kW (147 hp) and 320 Nm of torque in standard guise, paired with a single-speed reduction gear driving the front wheels and fed by a dense 40 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Compared to the previous generation, key technological breakthroughs included the e-Pedal system for one-pedal driving and the introduction of Nissan's ProPILOT single-lane highway driver assistance suite. In 2019, Nissan expanded the lineup with the Leaf e+ (marketed as Leaf Plus in North America), which featured a larger 62 kWh battery pack and a more powerful 160 kW (214 hp) and 340 Nm electric motor, significantly boosting both acceleration and range. A mild facelift arrived in early 2022, bringing revised exterior badging with the new Nissan emblem, darkened headlight surrounds, a simplified front grille, and striking new alloy wheel designs. Produced in Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom, the ZE1 was marketed widely across Europe, North America, Japan, and selected Asia-Pacific and Latin American markets through the end of its run in 2025.
