About this generation

The Outlander III (GF0W) vehicle generation was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 2012 to 2021 and offered in SUV body configurations.

The third-generation Mitsubishi Outlander (GF0W body code) debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Engineered with a lighter high-tensile body structure and improved aerodynamics, it enhanced cabin noise suppression and fuel economy. A major 2015 update pioneered Mitsubishi's 'Dynamic Shield' design theme with chrome front bumper accents and upgraded interior infotainment systems. Engineering of the Outlander III (GF0W) (factory code GF0W) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. The vehicle was distributed globally in multiple configuration packages designed to satisfy diverse market demands and regional regulatory specifications.

Powertrain choices included 2.0-liter (4J11), 2.4-liter (4J12), and 3.0-liter V6 petrol engines, alongside a 2.2-liter 4N14 turbodiesel. The flagship Outlander PHEV (GG0W chassis) combined a petrol engine with twin electric motors on both axles to create a full-time electric AWD system, becoming the world's best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV. Production concluded in 2021. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection. Drivetrain engineering integrated advanced suspension tuning and traction management systems. Periodic mid-cycle cosmetic and technical updates refreshed front-end aesthetics, lighting technology, and cabin infotainment features, maintaining competitive positioning across international consumer segments throughout its production lifespan.
