The third-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse (3G series, ST22/ST23 codes) launched in 1999 on Chrysler's ST-22 platform. Shifted from a rally-inspired turbo AWD sports car toward a comfortable front-wheel-drive grand tourer, its exterior styling featured ribbed door strakes derived from the SST concept car. Available body styles included a two-door coupe and Spyder convertible. Engineering of the Eclipse III (3G) (factory code 3G) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. Drive was strictly sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or four-speed Sportronic automatic transmission. A 2003 facelift brought revised front end styling before production ended in 2005.
