The second-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse (2G, platform series D31A through D39A) debuted in 1994. Featuring organic bio-design curves, aggressive air intakes, and rounded headlights, it offered a major styling evolution. In 1996, the range expanded with the addition of the Eclipse Spyder soft-top convertible. Engineering of the Eclipse II (2G) (factory code 2G) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. Standard models featured a 2.0-liter Chrysler 420a engine (140 hp), while the Spyder GS utilized a 2.4-liter 4G64 engine. Performance GS-T and AWD GSX models retained the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4G63T engine upgraded to 210 horsepower. Transmissions included five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics. A 1997 facelift refreshed the front bumper structure and lighting trim. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection. Drivetrain engineering integrated advanced suspension tuning and traction management systems.
