The Eclipse I (1G) vehicle generation was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1989 to 1994 and offered in coupe body configurations.
The first-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse sports coupe (1G series, chassis codes D21A through D27A) premiered in 1989 for the North American market. Developed under the Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler, the platform was sold under three badges: Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Laser, and Eagle Talon. It featured a low-slung aerodynamic design with pop-up headlights. Engineering of the Eclipse I (1G) (factory code 1G) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. The vehicle was distributed globally in multiple configuration packages designed to satisfy diverse market demands and regional regulatory specifications.
Engine offerings included a 1.8-liter 4G37 and a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter DOHC 4G63 engine. High-performance GS Turbo and GSX trims utilized the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4G63T engine producing up to 195 horsepower, with the GSX featuring permanent all-wheel drive. A 1992 mid-cycle facelift replaced the pop-up headlights with fixed exposed light assemblies before production wrapped up in 1994. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection. Drivetrain engineering integrated advanced suspension tuning and traction management systems.
