Mercedes-Benz SL I (W198/W121) gallery (1954–1963)

The Mercedes-Benz SL series originated from the W194 competition racer. In 1954, Mercedes debuted the production 300 SL (W198) at the International Motor Sports Show in New York. Due to its space-frame chassis design, the coupe required high sills, giving birth to the iconic upward-opening 'Gullwing' doors. In 1957, the Gullwing coupe was superseded by the 300 SL Roadster. Concurrently, from 1955 to 1963, Mercedes built the 190 SL roadster (W121 BII), aimed at a broader audience and based on modified Ponton sedan componentry.

The 300 SL W198 was a technological landmark as the world's first series-production car featuring direct fuel injection. Its 3.0-liter M198 inline-six engine produced 215 hp, enabling a top speed of up to 260 km/h, making it the fastest production car of its era. The companion 190 SL utilized a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine making 105 hp. Together, these models established the enduring SL (Sport Leicht) heritage.
