Maserati Quattroporte I (AM107) photos

The first-generation Maserati Quattroporte, designated internally as Tipo AM107, was introduced at the 1963 Turin Motor Show. It represented Maserati's inaugural entry into the luxury four-door grand touring segment, quickly becoming one of the fastest production sedans in the world. The elegant styling was penned by Pietro Frua, with body shells assembled by Carrozzeria Vignale on a unibody steel chassis featuring a front subframe. Initially, the Quattroporte was powered by an all-aluminum 4.1-liter quad-cam V8 engine breathing through four twin-choke Weber carburetors and producing 260 hp. In 1966, a larger 4.7-liter V8 delivering 290 hp joined the range, allowing the saloon to reach top speeds exceeding 255 km/h. Gearbox choices included a standard 5-speed ZF manual or an optional 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission. A major technical revision occurred in 1966, when the intricate De Dion rear axle setup was replaced by a more robust live axle suspended on leaf springs. Aesthetic updates included rectangular headlamps for certain markets. The AM107 was exported across major Western European countries and North America, remaining in production until 1969 with a total of 776 units built.
