Maserati MC20 Reaches 197 MPH Autonomously, Breaking Speed Records

Breakthrough Speed Achievement by Maserati MC20

An autonomously driven Maserati MC20 has shattered speed records in Florida, attaining a remarkable 197.7 miles per hour. This new record eclipses the previous mark of 192.8 mph, highlighting significant progress in self-driving automotive technology.

Venue and Track Specifications

The record-setting run occurred at the Kennedy Space Center's Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility last month during the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida event. The facility features one of the world's longest runways, spanning 2.8 miles, which provides ample space for conducting high-speed trials.

Advancements in Autonomous Systems

Paul Mitchell, CEO of Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), expressed enthusiasm about the achievement, stating, "These world speed records are much more than just a showcase of future technology; we are pushing AI-driver software and robotics hardware to the absolute edge." IAC collaborated with Politecnico di Milano to adapt the university’s AI driver technology for autonomous operation in the Maserati MC20.

The previous record was held by a race car developed by Indy Autonomous Challenge. Additionally, another MC20 model previously set the fastest autonomous car record at 177 mph, a milestone reached by IAC in November of last year.

Maserati’s Autonomous Initiatives and Market Performance

This achievement is part of Maserati’s ongoing efforts to demonstrate its self-driving technology. Last year, an autonomous GranCabrio participated in the 1000 Miglia event in Italy, and an MC20 model took part in the 2023 edition of the event. Despite these technological advancements, Maserati faced a significant downturn in sales last year, experiencing a nearly 60 percent decline compared to 2023. The brand sold only 11,300 units, struggling alongside other brands within the Stellantis group.
