The first generation of the Lotus Type 135 is a mid-engine performance coupe introduced to embody Lotus's revised multi-powertrain strategy, balancing modern electrification with pure mechanical engagement. Designed to occupy the space between the entry-level Emira and the halo Evija hypercar, it revives an eight-cylinder option that honors the legacy of the original Esprit V-8 while ushering in next-generation hybrid tech.

The chassis and body are built with stringent lightweight targets, achieving an overall curb weight of roughly 1.5 tons. The architecture incorporates an 800-volt electrical system alongside Formula 1-derived electric drive units that reduce motor mass from standard 75–95 kg levels down to just 20 kg per 150 kW unit. High torque outputs are channeled through an all-new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission co-developed with Horse Powertrains.

Powertrains consist of high-output plug-in hybrid systems pairing electric drive with turbocharged V-6 and V-8 combustion engines. The top-tier hybrid V-8 produces approximately 1,000 horsepower, meeting global customer demands for emotive exhaust sound and rapid acceleration while complying with modern emissions expectations.
