Lotus Unveils a Sharper, Lighter Emira 420 Sport With More Output
Lotus has expanded the Emira range with a new 420 Sport version that focuses on stronger performance and reduced mass. It uses the familiar AMG-built 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, but in this tune it produces 414 horsepower, giving the car a noticeable boost over the regular model and the earlier Emira SE.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through the same eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Torque now stands at 369 lb-ft (500 Nm), and Lotus says the improved output cuts the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time to 3.9 seconds. That makes the 420 Sport quicker than the standard Emira and slightly ahead of the SE as well.
The new variant is also the quickest Emira in top-speed terms, with a claimed maximum of 186 mph (300 km/h). Add the Lightweight Handling Pack and it becomes the lightest version too, weighing 3,153 pounds (1,430 kilograms). Lotus also says that package brings an extra 55 lbs (25 kg) of downforce for better high-speed stability.
Open-Air Feel Without a Full Convertible
In addition to the performance upgrades, Lotus has introduced a removable tinted glass roof panel. First shown on the 420 Sport, it will be available on every Emira model. It is not a folding roof, but it does let drivers enjoy a more open cabin experience, and the panel can be stored behind the seats when taken out.
Other changes include a revised suspension setup, grippier tires, and a ride height lowered by 0.2 inches (5 millimeters). The cabin remains largely familiar, although carbon-fiber shift paddles are now part of the package. Standard equipment includes 12-way power-adjustable seats, while optional Carbon Fiber and Hand Painted packs add extra visual flair.
Pricing for the Emira 420 Sport starts at $122,900, placing it $16,000 above the Turbo SE. Lotus says customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in August.
