Marking a major engineering paradigm shift, the 1988 Continental (developed under the FN9 program on the D186 platform) was the first front-wheel-drive vehicle in Lincoln’s history. Utilizing a stretched and heavily reinforced chassis derived from the Ford Taurus, it debuted with sleek flush aerodynamic glass and a low drag coefficient. The sole engine was a 3.8-liter Essex V6, initially producing 140 hp with throttle-body injection before receiving sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection (SEFI) in 1991 to boost output to 160 hp, paired with a four-speed AXOD/AX4S automatic transaxle. Advanced chassis hardware included computer-controlled adaptive air suspension with speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering. In late 1988 for the 1989 model year, it made history as the first domestic automobile equipped with standard dual front airbags.
