Marking a major engineering paradigm shift, the 1988 Continental (developed under the FN9 program on the D186 platform) was the first front-wheel-drive vehicle in Lincoln’s history. Utilizing a stretched and heavily reinforced chassis derived from the Ford Taurus, it debuted with sleek flush aerodynamic glass and a low drag coefficient. The sole engine was a 3.8-liter Essex V6, initially producing 140 hp with throttle-body injection before receiving sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection (SEFI) in 1991 to boost output to 160 hp, paired with a four-speed AXOD/AX4S automatic transaxle. Advanced chassis hardware included computer-controlled adaptive air suspension with speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering. In late 1988 for the 1989 model year, it made history as the first domestic automobile equipped with standard dual front airbags. Subtle aesthetic refreshes in 1990 and 1993 modernized the front fascia and rear taillight assembly for North American buyers.
