The ninth-generation Continental (FN74 platform) arrived for the 1995 model year, combining aerodynamic bio-design curves with a substantial mechanical upgrade. Engineered on a substantially stiffened front-wheel-drive architecture, it replaced the previous V6 with a transverse-mounted 4.6-liter 32-valve InTech DOHC Modular V8 delivering 260 hp (uprated to 275 hp in 1999), mated to an electronically controlled AX4N four-speed automatic transaxle. The Continental introduced the Memory Profile system, allowing customized settings for power steering assist, suspension firmness, audio presets, and seat positions. A major mid-cycle redesign for 1998 brought a more formal front clip with a waterfall grille, revised taillamps, and standard side-impact airbags. Later additions included the Alpine premium sound system and the RESCU emergency satellite communication system. Production at the Wixom Assembly Plant concluded in 2002, pausing the historic nameplate for over a decade.
