The first-generation Lexus RX luxury crossover SUV (chassis code XU10) debuted in December 1997 for the 1998 model year as the RX 300 (sold in Japan as the Toyota Harrier). Combining sedan-like ride comfort, quietness, and handling with all-wheel-drive capability and elevated seating, it created the template for modern luxury crossovers. The exterior showcased streamlined proportions and lower cladding. The cabin featured leather seating, real wood trim, sliding second-row seats, and Pioneer or Nakamichi audio systems.

Built on the Toyota Camry V20 architecture, power was supplied by a 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 engine producing 220 horsepower, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Buyers could select front-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive with a viscous coupling center differential. A 2000 facelift introduced clear headlight housings, restyled taillights, optional DVD navigation, and sound-insulating glass.
