The first-generation Lexus LS 400 luxury flagship sedan (chassis code XF10) debuted in January 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Originating from the secret F1 project initiated in 1983, the vehicle represented a $1 billion engineering effort involving 1,400 engineers. The design achieved a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.29 and unprecedented interior sound isolation. Technical features included electroluminescent Optitron gauges, air suspension, memory driver settings, and fluid cabin ergonomics.

Power originated from an all-new 4.0-liter 32-valve 1UZ-FE V8 engine delivering 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, mated to a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The powertrain was famous for its vibrationless operation, immortalized by the iconic champagne glass pyramid advertisement. Four-wheel double-wishbone suspension ensured serene ride quality. A 1992 refresh added larger disc brakes, 16-inch wheels, passenger airbag, and side molding updates.
