The second-generation Hyundai Sonata (Y2 chassis) debuted in June 1988 with styling penned by Italdesign's Giorgetto Giugiaro. Built on a front-wheel-drive platform shared with the Mitsubishi Galant, it offered superior interior packaging and marked Hyundai's major push into the North American mid-size sedan market.
Engine offerings included 1.8-liter, 2.0-liter four-cylinders, and a top-spec 3.0-liter Mitsubishi 6G72 V6 engine delivering 146 horsepower. Transmissions consisted of a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. A 1991 facelift revised front lighting graphics and interior trim styling.
