The first generation of the GMC compact pickup truck, originally introduced as the S-15 and renamed Sonoma in 1991.
The first generation of this compact pickup truck was introduced by General Motors for the 1982 model year under the GMC S-15 nameplate alongside its twin, the Chevrolet S-10, before being officially renamed the GMC Sonoma for 1991. Built on the body-on-frame GMT325 platform, the truck was available in rear-wheel drive and part-time four-wheel drive configurations. Body styles encompassed two-door Regular Cab and extended Maxi-Cab (Club Coupe) layouts paired with short or long cargo beds. The powertrain lineup featured inline-four gasoline engines ranging from 1.9 to 2.5 liters, 2.8-liter V6 engines with carburetors or throttle-body injection, and a robust 4.3-liter Vortec V6. An Isuzu-sourced 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel was also briefly available in the early 1980s. Transmission options included four-speed and five-speed manual gearboxes alongside three-speed and four-speed automatic units. Throughout its production run, the truck received multiple interior and exterior facelifts, with North America serving as its core market.
