GMC Savana I (GMT600) gallery (1996–2002)

The first-generation GMC Savana was launched in 1996 on the GMT600 platform, replacing the long-running GMC Vandura. Available in 1500, 2500, and 3500 series across standard and extended wheelbases, it offered configurations ranging from enclosed cargo vans to passenger vans carrying up to 15 occupants, as well as cutaway chassis for ambulances and shuttle buses. The powertrain lineup featured a wide selection of engines: a 4.3-liter Vortec V6, 5.0-liter and 5.7-liter small-block V8s, a massive 7.4-liter (later 8.1-liter) big-block V8, and a 6.5-liter Detroit Diesel V8. All powerplants were paired with robust four-speed 4L60-E or heavy-duty 4L80-E automatic transmissions. Compared to the previous Vandura series, the GMT600 offered a substantially stiffer frame, modern suspension geometry, dual front airbags, and lower step-in height. This generation was sold primarily in the United States and Canada, establishing a solid commercial fleet presence.
