GMC Safari I (M-body) gallery (1985–1994)
The first generation of the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive mid-size van based on the GM M-body platform.
Introduced for the 1985 model year, the first-generation GMC Safari was GM's robust response to the burgeoning minivan segment, developed alongside the Chevrolet Astro on the M-body platform. Utilizing a hybrid unibody structure with a heavy-duty subframe derived from full-size trucks and rear leaf springs, the Safari offered exceptional towing capability unmatched by front-wheel-drive competitors. Available in passenger configurations seating up to eight and commercial panel cargo formats, it initially offered a 2.5-liter Tech IV inline-four, but the legendary 4.3-liter Vortec V6 quickly became the core engine, mated to four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmissions. In 1990, an innovative full-time all-wheel-drive system was introduced, alongside an extended-body option and rear-wheel anti-lock brakes. The Safari established a loyal following across North America due to its blend of compact exterior dimensions and truck-like utility.
