About this generation

The first-generation GMC Canyon mid-size pickup truck developed on the GMT355 platform in collaboration with Isuzu.

The first-generation GMC Canyon debuted in 2004 as a modern replacement for the aging GMC Sonoma compact pickup. Built on the body-on-frame GMT355 platform developed in joint partnership between General Motors and Isuzu, it was mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Colorado and closely related to the Isuzu i-Series. The Canyon was available in three cab configurations: two-door Regular Cab, extended Extended Cab with rear half-doors, and spacious four-door Crew Cab. Initially, the powertrain lineup consisted of modular Atlas inline engines: a 2.8-liter four-cylinder LK5 producing 175 hp and an unusual 3.5-liter inline-five L52 delivering 220 hp. In 2007, a mid-cycle refresh brought upgraded engines with larger displacements—a 2.9-liter LLV inline-four (185 hp) and a 3.7-liter LLR inline-five (242 hp). Later, in 2009, a 5.3-liter LH8 V8 engine producing 300 hp was introduced along with brake and steering improvements. Transmission choices included a five-speed Aisin manual and a four-speed 4L60-E automatic, paired with rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive with low range. The pickup was manufactured at GM's Shreveport Assembly plant in Louisiana and distributed across North American markets.
