About this generation

The second-generation Expedition introduced independent rear suspension and PowerFold third-row seating.

Debuting for 2003, the second-generation Expedition (U222) set a full-size SUV benchmark by adopting an independent rear suspension (IRS). This engineering advance allowed the third-row seats to fold flush into the floor using PowerFold electric mechanisms while greatly improving dynamic road control and high-speed stability.

Under the hood, the 5.4-liter 3-valve Triton V8 engine produced 300 horsepower. Rack-and-pinion steering replaced the traditional recirculating-ball setup, and safety features were augmented by Roll Stability Control and Safety Canopy airbags for all three passenger rows. The lasting engineering impact of this generation remains a key benchmark in Ford's global model evolution history. Known for its dependable mechanical layout, the vehicle built a loyal customer base across diverse driving conditions. Offered with versatile feature packages, this iteration successfully balanced day-to-day usability with solid resale value.
