The first standalone generation of the Cadillac Fleetwood was produced from 1977 through 1984 on GM's re-engineered full-size rear-wheel-drive C-body chassis platform. Positioned above the De Ville range, the Fleetwood line showcased extended wheelbase variants, custom vinyl roof treatments, and lavish Fleetwood Brougham interior upholstery. The body design featured an upright traditional Cadillac radiator grille, vertical taillight lenses encased in chrome bezels, and full-length bodyside moldings.
Engine offerings evolved over time: starting with a 425 cubic-inch (7.0-liter) V8 (180 hp) for 1977–1979, followed by a 368 cubic-inch V8 in 1980 and the variable-displacement V8-6-4 in 1981. From 1982, the lightweight 4.1-liter HT4100 V8 (135 hp) became standard, alongside an available 5.7-liter Oldsmobile V8 diesel. Power traveled through 3-speed and 4-speed overdrive automatics, supported by automatic rear height control.
