About this generation

The classic E24 M6 combined shark-nose styling with the race-bred 24-valve engine derived from the iconic BMW M1 supercar.

Debuting in late 1983 as the M635CSi in European markets and officially badged simply as the M6 in North America, the E24 represented BMW Motorsport's premier flagship grand tourer. Powering the coupe was the celebrated 3.5-liter M88/3 inline-six engine (designated S38 with a catalytic converter for North America), featuring dual overhead camshafts and six individual throttle butterflies derived directly from the mid-engine M1 supercar, delivering up to 282 horsepower in peak European specification.

Mated exclusively to a five-speed Getrag manual gearbox and a limited-slip rear differential, the E24 M6 effortlessly achieved top speeds exceeding 150 mph. Its iconic shark-nose front fascia, low-slung stance, BBS alloy wheels, and hand-stitched leather upholstery created an enduring icon of 1980s automotive prestige, establishing a proud legacy that inspired subsequent generations of the BMW M6.
