The BMW M2 story began in 2016 with the launch of the first generation in a coupe body style, designated internally as the F87. Conceived as a focused compact sports car, it borrowed core suspension components from larger M models. Under the hood, an inline six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine was paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch transmission. Mid-cycle updates brought revised styling along with upgraded engine packages for higher-tier variants.

The second generation, bearing the G87 index, arrived in 2023 while retaining the two-door coupe configuration and classic rear-wheel-drive layout. Built on a newer platform, it received a stiffer chassis structure and a modern twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, available with both manual and automatic transmissions.

The generation shift introduced sharp angular exterior styling, modernized aerodynamics, and an updated interior centered around BMW curved digital displays, while preserving the analog driving character of the original car.
