Unveiled in 2013, the first-generation BMW 4 Series established an independent identity for Munich’s midsize coupes and convertibles, which had previously belonged to the 3 Series lineup. Comprising the F32 coupe, the F33 hardtop convertible, and the sleek F36 Gran Coupe four-door hatchback, the series boasted a lower center of gravity, wider tracks, and stiffer chassis tuning. Its swept-back silhouette and muscular rear haunches clearly demarcated the sports coupe from its traditional sedan sibling, signaling a refined focus on driver engagement.

Under the hood, the F32 family offered a broad range of turbocharged inline-four and inline-six petrol and diesel engines paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Top-tier non-M variants such as the 435i and later 440i delivered smooth power delivery and an evocative exhaust note, while BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensured maximum traction in all weather conditions. The first 4 Series successfully balanced daily usable comfort with sharp dynamic agility until production ceased in 2020.
