Acura TL II (UA4/UA5) gallery (1998–2003)

The second-generation Acura TL (chassis codes UA4 and UA5) debuted in late 1998 for the 1999 model year. Production shifted from Sayama, Japan, to Honda's manufacturing plant in Marysville, Ohio. Built on Honda's global mid-size architecture with a transverse powertrain layout, the second-gen TL offered expanded rear legroom, improved structural rigidity, and a larger trunk capacity compared to its predecessor. Interior amenities featured available DVD-based touch-screen navigation, a premium Bose sound system, standard leather upholstery, and front side-impact airbags. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.

Initial models were powered by a 3.2-liter J32A1 V6 engine producing 225 horsepower featuring VTEC variable valve timing, initially paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission that was upgraded to a 5-speed SportShift automatic for 2000. For the 2002 model year, Acura launched the high-performance TL Type S (UA5), featuring a high-output 260-horsepower J32A2 V6 engine, firmer damper and spring rates, 17-inch alloy wheels, and sports seating. The refresh also introduced restyled clear-lens headlights and a revised front grille. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
