The first-generation Acura MDX bearing factory code YD1 debuted in October 2000 as a 2001 model year release. Constructed on an adapted Honda Global Mid-Size platform featuring unibody architecture, extended wheelbase, and fully independent suspension, the MDX pioneered the luxury three-row crossover SUV class. A major mechanical highlight was the automatic VTM-4 (Variable Torque Management) four-wheel drive system. It automatically routed power to the rear wheels during front-wheel slippage and included a manual lock feature for the rear differential to navigate slippery off-road surfaces at low speeds. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.

Powering the crossover was a 3.5-liter J35A3 V6 engine delivering 240 horsepower mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with Grade Logic control. A comprehensive mid-cycle update for the 2004 model year upgraded the engine output to 265 horsepower via the J35A5 specification, added dual exhaust outlets, enhanced cabin sound insulation, and standardized Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). Further minor styling refinements, updated wheel choices, and upgraded satellite navigation arrived for 2005 and 2006 before production ended. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
