Toyota Introduces the GR Corolla TC: AWD Racing Innovation
AWD Returns to Sports-Car Racing
In a surprising move, Toyota Gazoo Racing North America (TGRNA) has unveiled the Toyota GR Corolla TC, an exciting new race car that brings back the all-wheel drive phenomenon to sports-car racing. This development comes after a unique collaboration between TGRNA and SRO Motorsports Group America.
Engine and Transmission
The GR Corolla TC comes equipped with a stock 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine and an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission. This powerful combination is perfectly complemented by the GR Corolla road car's innovative "GR-Four" all-wheel drive system, which distributes power to the rear wheels using a clutch pack.
Advanced Controls and Suspension
While the drivetrain components remain consistent with the road car, TGRNA has implemented bespoke Bosch engine management and ABS systems to enhance traction control and ABS performance. The GR Corolla TC features the same suspension geometry as the road car but with adjustable JRi dampers and Alcon brakes. Other notable racing upgrades include a FIA-spec roll cage, stripped interior with racing essentials, and a steering wheel borrowed from Toyota's Supra GT4 car.
Aero Enhancements and Competition
The GR Corolla TC boasts a new aerodynamic package, highlighted by a prominent rear wing. TGRNA had to develop specialized brackets to support the composite wing on the car's rear window. This impressive racing machine will compete against various cars in the SRO TC America series, including Civic Type Rs and BMW M2s, with the aim of achieving a balanced playing field using the Balance of Performance system.
Pricing and Availability
While pricing details have not been disclosed, the GR Corolla TC is expected to have a higher price point than TGRNA's previous homebrew race car, the GR86 Cup. Stay tuned for more information regarding the release of this exhilarating all-wheel drive racing experience.
