Lamborghini Takes the Lead: Bentley's Sales Plummet in 2024

VW Group Sales Results for 2024

The Volkswagen Group has released its full sales results for 2024, revealing a 2.3 percent drop in deliveries to 9.03 million vehicles. However, the most notable shift occurred within the group's 'Brand Group Progressive,' composed of Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley. While Audi and Lamborghini had their own contrasting sales performances, Bentley's numbers took a significant hit.

Lamborghini's Remarkable Rise

In the past year, Lamborghini surpassed its internal competitor, Bentley, by delivering 100 more vehicles. This is a remarkable achievement considering Bentley's historical dominance over Lamborghini within the VW Group. In 2024, Bentley experienced a staggering 21.5 percent decline in sales, delivering only 10,600 cars.

A Tale of Sales Dominance

In recent years, Bentley has consistently outsold Lamborghini, even before the addition of the Bentayga SUV to its lineup. For instance, in 2016, Bentley sold nearly triple the number of cars compared to Lamborghini. However, the tides have turned, and Lamborghini has transformed into a fierce competitor.

Factors Impacting Bentley's Sales

The discontinuation of Bentley's W-12 engine and the restricted availability of the V-8 engine have negatively influenced its sales. Additionally, the introduction of the new Continental GT, which typically slows down production, further contributed to Bentley's decline in sales.

Future Plans for Electric Lineups

Both Bentley and Lamborghini have plans to expand their lineups by introducing electric vehicles. However, VW Group's 'high-end brands' have postponed their EV launches. Lamborghini's Lanzador GT will now be released in 2029, a year later than originally planned. Similarly, Bentley's 'Urban SUV' has been delayed until 2026.
