Lamborghini Joins the Crowd: First EV Delayed to 2029
Waiting for the Right Time
In a move that mirrors other automakers, Lamborghini has pushed back the release of its first electric vehicle. The Italian company's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, announced that the production-ready Lanzador EV will now arrive in 2029 instead of the previously scheduled 2028. This strategic decision comes as a response to the industry's slowing growth and the need to reassess launch schedules.
Timing is Everything
Winkelmann expressed confidence in Lamborghini's decision, stating that he believes 2029 is the optimal timing for the EV's debut. The CEO also acknowledged that the automotive segment may not be fully prepared for electric vehicles until 2026, making the delay a strategic move.
Considerations for the Future
In addition to market timing, Lamborghini is also considering potential changes to the European Union's combustion engine ban. A review is scheduled for 2026, and the automaker is waiting to see if any adjustments will be made. Furthermore, Lamborghini has expressed interest in exploring synthetic fuels to maintain internal combustion engines in their vehicles, aligning with their long-term strategy.
A New Direction
When the Lanzador concept was unveiled in 2023, it signaled Lamborghini's entry into the electric vehicle market. However, instead of a supercar, the initial EV offering from Lamborghini will be a four-seat grand tourer. Winkelmann previously stated that electric supercars have not been successful in the market and may not be appealing to consumers. Lamborghini's decision to delay the EV's launch aligns with their focus on finding the right balance between innovation and consumer demand.
