Renault and John Cockerill Unveil Forefront Unmanned Electric Off-Roader
Renault has partnered with Belgian defense specialist John Cockerill to develop an unmanned military off-roader called the Forefront concept. Designed to operate in dangerous territories without a human driver, the platform is remotely operated and capable of autonomous driving tasks in difficult-to-reach locations.
The Forefront concept features an all-electric powertrain with two electric motors delivering all-wheel drive, complemented by rear-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability in tight quarters. Silent operation is a major asset for tactical operations where acoustic stealth is critical. The vehicle is projected to achieve a pure electric range of around 400 kilometers (249 miles) on a single charge and can be equipped with a combustion engine range extender to prolong operations. Additionally, the platform boasts a payload capacity of up to 1,000 kilograms (2,205 pounds).
Beyond front-line combat applications, the Forefront is envisioned for multi-role deployment. Potential military applications include logistics support, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, anti-drone defense, fire support, and medical evacuation. It is also suitable for civilian emergency response, civil protection, and hazardous industrial operations such as firefighting or entering toxic disaster areas. The French armed forces provided input into the project, and the vehicle is scheduled to take part in field trials and military exercises to gather operator feedback.
While neither Renault nor John Cockerill has announced mass production schedules, the project highlights how automotive manufacturers are applying their commercial development and engineering expertise to defense technologies. Other global automakers have similar defense ventures, including Daimler Truck Defence, GM Defense, Ford, and Jaguar Land Rover.
