Porsche Debuts Mid-Engine Mission S Concept With Rumored 850 HP Flat-Eight
Porsche has unveiled the Mission S concept car—a mid-engine supercar designed to sit a step above the 911 family. The premiere took place on a pier in the New York borough of Queens—at the exact same location where a photoshoot for the iconic Porsche 550 Spyder was held in 1953. Although the prototype is billed as a design study, its bodywork is close to a production car and points to the brand's plans to launch a permanent model in this niche.
The concept's exterior combines features of the German brand's classic and racing cars: the round headlights and sculpted front fenders reference the 911 family, the flat nose section recalls the GT1 race car, and the roofline sloping smoothly toward the rear evokes the 959 model. At the rear, four exhaust tailpipes confirm the presence of an internal combustion engine, while an exposed cooling fan in the spirit of the famous Porsche 917 sports prototype is mounted on the rear decklid.
The two-seater cockpit is driver-focused and features a low seating position with sports seats. The creators dispensed with a large central display: instead, five round gauges with an analog tachometer needle and physical control switches are placed in front of the driver.
Official technical specifications and pricing have not yet been disclosed. According to unofficial insider reports, the car will receive a new twin-turbocharged flat-eight engine with an 8,000 rpm redline. Expected output is around 850 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque, which will enable a 0–100 km/h sprint in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of over 330 km/h.
The Mission S project is part of the new "Sportwagenschmiede '35" corporate strategy, under which the company intends to reduce production volumes while focusing on more expensive cars. In the future, the new mid-engine platform could become the basis for an entire family of models. For the brand, this marks a return to the hypercar segment following the 918 Spyder, which was produced from 2013 to 2015. According to Auto Express, the production version will be positioned above the 911 in the lineup in terms of both performance and price.
