Mercedes-Benz's Compact G-Class to Feature Hybrid Option Alongside EV
Mercedes-Benz appears to be revising its strategy for the upcoming compact G-Class. Instead of launching it solely as an electric vehicle, the luxury automaker is reportedly preparing a hybrid alternative.
According to Autocar, the new 'Baby' G-Class will incorporate the hybrid powertrain sourced from the CLA model. This setup includes a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which delivers up to 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system works in tandem with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
It remains uncertain whether Mercedes will enhance the hybrid’s performance specifically for this off-road SUV. However, the report suggests the vehicle will come with standard four-wheel drive and be built on a dedicated platform designed for ruggedness.
While the hybrid variant is now in the spotlight, Mercedes-Benz is still expected to debut the Baby G-Class initially as a battery-electric model, with production slated to commence around 2027. Despite its smaller size, the manufacturer intends for this new G-Class to maintain the toughness and capability emblematic of its larger predecessor.
Introducing a hybrid powertrain to the compact G-Class aligns with shifting consumer preferences, especially as enthusiasm for fully electric vehicles slows in some regions. Offering a hybrid option will likely expand its appeal, particularly in markets like the U.S., where rugged SUVs enjoy strong demand.
