Exciting Arrival: Mercedes-Benz’s Premium Electric Minivan Set to Enter US Market

  • Mercedes-Benz introduces the VLE, an electric minivan that accommodates up to eight passengers.
  • The initial release features a 272-horsepower single-motor setup.
  • A long-wheelbase model will be available specifically for the U.S. market.

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the new VLE van. While this type of luxury van is common in China as a chauffeur-driven vehicle, American buyers will soon have access to it too. Mercedes plans to launch a long-wheelbase variant tailored for the U.S. audience.

Built on Mercedes’ Van Architecture platform, the VLE was initially previewed by the Vision V concept in 2025. The production model retains signature design cues like the distinctive greenhouse silhouette, dual power bulges on the hood, and a bold front fascia.

Depending on the trim level, the van showcases an illuminated grille, star-shaped LED daytime running lights, and a prominent standing star emblem on the hood. The rear features a sleek arc-shaped taillight design integrated with the spoiler. Mercedes highlights the VLE’s impressive aerodynamic efficiency, boasting a drag coefficient of just 0.25.

Performance and Engineering Highlights

The launch model, the VLE 300, is powered by a 272-horsepower (203 kW) electric motor. A more powerful VLE 400 variant, equipped with a 409-hp (305 kW) motor, will follow. This version accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. An all-wheel-drive system is available, engaging a rear electric motor only when additional traction or power is necessary.

The vehicle houses a 115.0-kWh (usable) nickel-manganese-cobalt battery utilizing 800-volt tech. Mercedes claims a driving range exceeding 434 miles (700 kilometers) according to Europe’s WLTP cycle, and rapid charging can replenish 221 miles of range in just 14 minutes.

The VLE features Airmatic air suspension that leverages Google Maps data to optimize ride height and enhance efficiency. The suspension offers up to 1.5 inches of travel. Rear-wheel steering provides up to seven degrees of movement, resulting in a tight 35.75-foot curb-to-curb turning radius.

Opulent and Flexible Interior

The VLE can accommodate between six and eight occupants across three rows, depending on the chosen wheelbase and configuration. Mercedes will provide three different center console layouts, including a compact design with wireless charging and a larger cooler-equipped option.

The interior dashboard closely mirrors the Vision V concept, featuring a 10.3-inch driver display, a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 14.0-inch interactive passenger display. In the rear, passengers can enjoy an enormous 31.1-inch 8K screen that folds down from the ceiling, complete with an 8.0-megapixel camera for video conferencing.

Seating options include manually adjustable Roll & Go seats that slide forward and backward and lock into position, as well as power-adjusted seats. Luxury amenities comprise three-zone climate control, rear-seat tables, an augmented reality head-up display, and a 22-speaker Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos support.

Mercedes states the VLE offers up to 28.0 cubic feet of cargo capacity with all three rows in place. Final specifications such as pricing, powertrain details, and market-specific features will be unveiled closer to the vehicle’s launch date.

Our Perspective: While luxury minivans have long been popular in Asian markets, Mercedes’ decision to bring the VLE to the U.S. is a welcome move. With growing consumer interest in spacious, versatile vehicles, a premium minivan provides a more comfortable and accessible alternative to large SUVs and crossovers. We hope this encourages other manufacturers to explore the upscale minivan segment, which offers unique appeal beyond typical high-priced SUVs.
