Compact Mercedes G-Class Caught on Camera, Matches All Expectations
- The miniature G retains the iconic boxy silhouette
- Current prototype runs on electric power, but combustion engine options are rumored
- Launch anticipated by late 2027
Nearly three years have passed since Mercedes unveiled the concept of a smaller G-Class. Although an official debut date remains unannounced, recent spy shots provide the clearest glimpse yet of this compact off-roader, affectionately dubbed the “Little G” by CEO Ola Källenius. It promises to be as popular as its larger predecessor.
The design is unmistakably a scaled-down version of the traditional G-Class, featuring the same rugged, box-shaped body, pronounced wheel arches, and flat roofline. Instead of a rear-mounted spare tire, the prototype sports a storage container similar to that on the electric G-Class, attached to a side-hinged, swing-out rear door reminiscent of the classic model.
Despite heavy camouflage, the vehicle looks promising, and its smaller footprint should enhance city driving convenience. While most owners may not take it off-road frequently, Mercedes assures that the new G will have authentic off-road capabilities thanks to a platform described by the company’s chief as a "completely new development."
The traditional G-Class measures around 185 inches (4.7 meters) in length without the rear spare tire, whereas this upcoming variant is expected to be about 173 inches (4.4 meters) long. The prototype also appears to sit lower than the full-size G, suggesting reduced ground clearance.
Although the prototype is fully electric—evident from its silent operation—there are reports of an internal combustion engine (ICE) version being planned. Mercedes may introduce a hybrid variant utilizing a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, similar to the one in the new CLA. Both electric and gasoline models are expected to come with standard all-wheel drive.
Besides the “Little G,” Mercedes is also working on reviving the G-Class Cabriolet. This four-door convertible with a retractable soft top has been teased and is rumored to come in an AMG-tuned G63 version. Production is slated to start in the second half of 2027.
