Genesis Debuts Its First-Ever Hybrid SUV

Genesis has taken a long-awaited step into electrified power with its first hybrid model. Despite being an established luxury name for years, the brand had never offered a hybrid before, even though its parent company has used gas-electric technology for quite some time.

The new GV80 Hybrid does not simply reuse an existing system from another Hyundai Group vehicle. Instead, it introduces a fresh hybrid setup built for the brand, including a liquid-cooled battery designed to help manage heat more effectively and improve overall performance.

At the core of the system is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine working alongside two electric motors. One motor serves as a starter-generator, while the other provides drive power and regenerative braking. Genesis also uses that second motor to eliminate the need for a traditional reverse gear, simplifying the layout.

Stronger Output and Better Mileage

Genesis says the rear-wheel-drive version with 19-inch wheels delivers about 25 percent better fuel economy than the comparable gasoline-only GV80. Based on the EPA figure of 22 mpg combined for the non-hybrid model, the hybrid should land near 27 mpg.

Performance improves as well. Output climbs from 300 horsepower to 347 horsepower, while torque rises from 311 to 391 pound-feet. Thanks to those gains, the GV80 Hybrid can reach 62 mph in 7.1 seconds.

Extra Comfort and Added Features

The hybrid SUV also includes a Stay Mode that keeps the cabin climate system running even when the engine shuts off, drawing power from the battery. Regenerative braking is managed more intelligently with help from navigation data, speed-camera info, and traffic awareness to improve efficiency.

Genesis has also refined the engine for quieter operation and fitted a new seven-speed automatic transmission for smoother shifts. Outside, the SUV gets updated wheel and grille designs, while the cabin gains new two-tone color combinations, fresh wood trim choices, and additional upholstery stitching patterns.

Genesis has confirmed that the GV80 Hybrid will be sold in the United States, where it is expected to cost more than the standard GV80, which starts at $60,395.

For Genesis, this hybrid is more than just a new powertrain. It gives the GV80 more power, better efficiency, and a more modern technical package, making the brand’s first hybrid an especially notable debut.
