Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC Packs a Massive 795 Horsepower Punch
- The Dark Horse SC delivers 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque.
- Ford designed it in tandem with the Mustang GTD and GT3 to excel on the track.
- The 5.2-liter V8 engine is meticulously hand-built in Dearborn, Michigan.
We live in a time where monstrous horsepower figures are becoming increasingly common, and the forthcoming Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC is no exception. Boasting an impressive 795 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, this model sits just 20 horsepower below the $327,000 Mustang GTD — yet it comes with a fraction of the price.
The Dark Horse SC represents Ford’s newest high-performance Mustang variant. As announced last month, its starting price is $103,490 before taxes and fees. While it’s not a budget-friendly Mustang, the SC promises serious track capabilities. Ford has confirmed it was engineered alongside the GTD and Mustang GT3, incorporating advanced technology to maximize its potent output.
Dominant Powertrain and Enhanced Aerodynamics
The SC’s powertrain shares similarities with the GTD, featuring a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that's hand-assembled. Power is managed through a Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, ensuring rapid gear shifts and optimal performance.
Ford has tailored the bodywork specifically for track use, enhancing cooling efficiency. The aluminum hood includes a carbon fiber vent that produces 2.5 times the downforce compared to the standard Dark Horse’s vent. Although the rain tray is removed, this upgrade significantly improves aerodynamics.
Buyers can opt for a Track Pack, which introduces Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, removal of the rear seats, and carbon fiber wheels. These enhancements reduce the car’s weight by 150 pounds. All Dark Horse SC versions come equipped with the latest Magnetorheological dampers and adjustable traction control for superior handling.
Pricing and Competition
These performance upgrades come at a price. A Dark Horse SC with the Track Pack option costs at least $139,990. Adding the Special Edition package—which includes painted hood graphics, a Solar Red interior, and a Carbon Fiber Appearance Package—pushes the price to $170,970.
This places the SC in a higher price category, where competitors like the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, select Porsche 911 models, and even the Corvette ZR1 reside.
However, the most balanced choice appears to be the $139,990 Track Pack variant, competing directly with the $122,795 Corvette Z06 and the $140,356 Porsche 911 Carrera. While the Dark Horse SC may not match their interior refinement and overall luxury, it offers a significant horsepower edge over the 911 Carrera’s 388 hp and surpasses the Z06’s 670 hp.
