Ford Mustang GTD Competition Smashes Corvette ZR1X Nürburgring Record with 6:40 Lap

  • The Ford Mustang GTD Competition now holds the title for the fastest street-legal American car at the Nürburgring.
  • Its lap time of 6:40.835 outpaces the Corvette ZR1X by more than eight seconds.
  • The Competition model is lighter and more powerful, cutting 11 seconds from the Mustang GTD’s prior record.

In 2024, the Mustang GTD became the quickest American production vehicle to tackle the Nürburgring, completing the lap in 6 minutes and 57.685 seconds — surpassing the Dodge Viper ACR by 4.3 seconds and breaking the seven-minute barrier for the first time for a U.S. car. Ford then returned to the iconic track, reducing the lap time to 6 minutes and 52.072 seconds.

However, Chevrolet soon stole the spotlight with the Corvette ZR1 and its track-focused ZR1X variant. The ZR1 completed its lap in 6 minutes and 50.763 seconds, while the ZR1X was even quicker at 6 minutes and 49.275 seconds. In response, Ford CEO Jim Farley declared a challenge, signaling the rivalry was far from over.

Fast-forward to 2026, Ford has reclaimed supremacy on the Nürburgring with the Mustang GTD Competition clocking an astonishing 6 minutes and 40.835 seconds. This run not only improves upon the previous Mustang GTD by 11 seconds but also eclipses the Corvette ZR1X by a significant margin. This impressive feat was achieved with a heavily upgraded Mustang, distinct from the original GTD.

Enhanced Mustang GTD Competition: Power and Weight Reduction

The Mustang GTD Competition features an evolved version of the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, delivering more horsepower than the standard 815-hp GTD. Weight-saving measures include magnesium wheels, carbon-fiber bucket seats, and lighter suspension components, though the exact weight reduction has not been disclosed. For comparison, the regular Mustang GTD tips the scales at 4,404 pounds (1,998 kilograms).

Significant aerodynamic improvements have been integrated, such as a redesigned rear wing, front dive planes, and carbon-fiber aero discs at the rear, all contributing to increased downforce and enhanced grip on specially developed tires.

The record-breaking runs were piloted by Ford Performance and Multimatic’s factory driver Dirk Müller, continuing the tradition of professional expertise behind these achievements.

Limited Edition Mustang GTD Competition to Reach Customers

Ford plans to release a street-legal version of the GTD Competition in limited, serialized numbers. Pricing details remain undisclosed, but it is expected to be significantly higher than the base Mustang GTD’s $327,960. For context, the Corvette ZR1X starts at a comparatively modest $223,195.

Alongside this record, Ford has reopened orders for the standard Mustang GTD, with the Competition variant slated for release later.

It's worth noting that Ford also holds the fastest lap record at the Nürburgring for a track-only American car with the GT Mk IV, which logged a blistering 6 minutes and 15.977 seconds, ranking it as the third-fastest overall behind the Volkswagen ID.R and Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. The GT Mk IV remains the fastest combustion-engine vehicle around the German circuit.
