Volkswagen Teases Upcoming Affordable Electric Car

Volkswagen has released a teaser image of their upcoming affordable electric car, giving us a glimpse of its design. The car, which is expected to be called the ID.1, is set to be released in 2027 with a starting price of around €20,000. This is part of Volkswagen's strategy to offer high-quality electric vehicles at an affordable price.

The ID.1 will be built on the MEB Small platform and will have a front-wheel drive configuration. While the battery size and range have not been revealed, the previous ID.2all concept had an estimated range of 280 miles (450 kilometers) on the WLTP cycle. Charging the battery from 10% to 80% took around 20 minutes.

Volkswagen had initially planned to collaborate with Renault on the ID.1, but the partnership fell through. Renault has already previewed their own affordable electric car, the Twingo, which is set to go on sale in 2026. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has expressed enthusiasm for the ID.1, calling it an affordable and high-quality electric car for Europe.
