Volkswagen Overtakes Tesla in European Electric Vehicle Sales

Once leading the global electric vehicle market, Tesla is now being surpassed by Volkswagen's robust EV lineup in Europe.

A recent analysis by Jato Dynamics examined new vehicle registrations in Europe for the first quarter of 2025, revealing unexpected trends. By March 31, Volkswagen had registered 65,679 new electric vehicles, reflecting a remarkable 157% increase compared to the previous year. In stark contrast, Tesla's registrations dropped by 38%, totaling 53,237.

It's important to highlight that these figures represent registrations rather than actual sales. Although Tesla does not disclose regional sales data, the significant gap of over 12,000 registrations strongly indicates that Volkswagen is currently outpacing Tesla in the European market.

Volkswagen differentiates itself by providing detailed regional sales data, which corroborates Jato Dynamics' findings. The company reported a 112% increase in Group EV sales for Q1 2025, primarily driven by Volkswagen's own models.

Volkswagen's Leading EV Models

Marco Schubert, a member of Volkswagen Group’s executive committee for sales, stated, “Our products are resonating well with consumers, confirming that the Volkswagen Group is on the right path. We boosted our global all-electric deliveries by approximately 60% in the first quarter. Specifically in Europe, we significantly strengthened our leadership in this segment by doubling our deliveries.”

The ID.4 and ID.5 are Volkswagen Group's top-selling electric models globally, with combined sales of 43,700 units in Q1. They are followed by the ID.3 with 28,100 units, the Audi Q4 E-Tron at 22,800, and the Skoda Enyaq with 20,200 units. Other notable Volkswagen models include the ID.7, which sold 19,100 units, and the ID.Buzz, available in Europe as a cargo van, with 12,700 sales.

Factors Contributing to Tesla's Decline

What is causing Tesla's downturn? The company faces widespread criticism due to CEO Elon Musk's political activities, particularly his association with former US President Donald Trump. Tesla dealerships have been targeted by protesters, and Tesla owners have faced backlash merely for being seen in their cars. Additionally, new tariffs on a variety of European-imported products, including vehicles, may be affecting Tesla's performance. To counter these challenges, Musk might need to reconsider his political engagements and focus more on managing the company.

However, the repercussions might be too extensive to recover from easily.
