Unexpected Rally Performer: Customized Supra Excels on Gravel Tracks

The Toyota Supra isn't the first vehicle that comes to mind for stage rally competitions. Typically envisioned as a sleek, rear-wheel-drive coupe optimized for sharp turns and fast lap times, the Supra seems an unlikely contender for rally stages. However, the Team O'Neil Rally School has showcased that the Supra can effectively compete on authentic rally gravel courses.

This particular Supra has been extensively modified by the Capitan Crankshaft YouTube channel. Enhancements include a half-roll cage, gravel-specific tires, and extended rally suspension on the front end. Despite these alterations, the car retains its rear-wheel-drive architecture and the BMW-sourced turbocharged straight-six engine, which enhance its overall performance.

Wyatt Knox, the lead instructor at Team O'Neil, has spoken highly of the Supra's performance on the school's gravel handling course. Even with a standard road ABS system, the Supra is capable of rotating during braking and is easy to initiate slides. Knox also praised the car's eight-speed automatic transmission for its quick responsiveness and ease of use. He mentioned a preference for the automatic over a manual gearbox, as it allows him to focus more on steering and pedal control.

Beyond its drifting abilities, the Supra has shown competitive timing. During a timed rally stage at Team O'Neil, the Supra achieved an impressive stage time of 2 minutes and 9 seconds. However, comparing this time to other seasonal performances is challenging due to the differing surface conditions between winter and summer stages.

When compared to winter stage times, the Supra ranks as the second-fastest vehicle, outperforming traditional rally cars like the Ford Fiesta and the Subaru WRX. On the other hand, in summer stage comparisons, the Supra is among the slower performers, trailing even the Kia Sedona.

The suggested next step is to test the Supra under more favorable weather conditions. This would provide a clearer understanding of the Supra's true potential and suitability for gravel rally stages.
