Subaru Signals Near-Production STI with Dual Concepts at the Japan Mobility Show
Subaru hasn’t offered a proper STI in the United States since the 2021 WRX STI ended production. While officials once said a gas-powered STI wasn’t in the plans, the latest concepts revealed at the Japan Mobility Show point toward a potential near-production model.
Two STI Concepts Unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show
Subaru introduced not one but two STI concepts at the event. The Performance-E STI envisions an all-electric interpretation of the STI idea, while the Performance-B STI attracts most attention as a gasoline-powered performance car.
Performance-B STI: Five-Door WRX-Based Performance
Based on the current second-generation WRX (VB) sold in the US, the Performance-B STI transforms the sedan into a five-door hatch with a full set of STI enhancements. It features new front and rear splitters, side skirts, a hood scoop, unique wheels, red accents, and a large rear wing.
Subaru has not confirmed the engine, only noting that the concept uses a horizontally opposed engine. The most likely powerplant is a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four derived from the WRX, though official confirmation is pending. Observers at the show captured the concept in person on site.
Beyond the exterior, the STI concept closely resembles a WRX five-door with added branding. Inside, the cabin appears largely identical to the current WRX—save for STI badges—and includes a six-speed manual paired with a prominent central touchscreen.
With electrification trend lines in mind, Subaru’s openness to reviving the STI name on a gasoline-powered performance car would be a notable move, especially as WRX sales have cooled. This concept could be exactly what Subaru needs to reinvigorate its performance lineup.
