Ram’s Heavy-Duty Truck Boasts Strong Performance and Bold Styling, Yet Has Noticeable Flaws

Ram continues to hold a prominent position in the heavy-duty truck segment, with its 2500 series offering a blend of power, versatility, and distinctive design. Though these trucks maintain their reputation for toughness, the latest update stops short of redefining the class.

The 2025 Ram 2500 lineup marks the first major refresh since 2019, introducing improvements such as enhanced driver assistance features, upgraded infotainment systems, and increased diesel engine output, all framed by a massive new front grille. Ram showcased two contrasting models for the 2026 Truck of the Year evaluation: a long-wheelbase diesel towing specialist and a gasoline-powered off-road Power Wagon variant.

Strengths

  • Wide range of configurations to suit various needs
  • Refined yet powerful diesel engine option
  • Power Wagon excels in off-road conditions

Weaknesses

  • Steering lacks precision
  • Trailer backing assistance is ineffective
  • Lane-centering technology is insufficient

The Cummins diesel engine impresses with smooth power delivery during heavy hauling, providing a comfortable driving experience despite a firm suspension and somewhat vague steering feel. The Power Wagon tackles rough terrain with confidence, performing admirably off-road, although it falls short of the exceptional capability shown by Ram’s 1500 TRX and Rebel Heavy Duty models.

However, the truck’s trailer backup system proved frustrating. Unlike Ford’s more intuitive design, Ram’s setup struggles with sharp trailer turns and inconsistently estimates trailer length, which hampers maneuverability. In practice, manual trailer steering was often more reliable than relying on the truck’s automated system.

The Power Wagon’s 6.4-liter V8 engine delivers adequate power but is notably thirsty. The reintroduced column shifter pays homage to traditional truck controls but suffers from a loose feel that makes selecting reverse gear prone to error. Additionally, the large hood bulge obstructs forward visibility, a problem that worsens when the truck is loaded and the rear suspension sags.

Overall, the Ram 2500 performs well in conventional truck roles but does not dramatically outshine rivals. The 6.7-liter Cummins diesel remains one of the best in the segment, though Ford’s Power Stroke engine edges it out in torque. Ford trucks also provide more practical work-oriented features, while Chevrolet and GMC models offer superior ride comfort and sharper steering. By comparison, the Ram 2500 and Ford F-250 both feel less stable on the road.

Unlike the smaller Ram 1500, which often leads its class, the heavy-duty Ram models do not dominate their category. While improvements over previous generations are clear, Ram faces stiff competition from other manufacturers that continue to innovate aggressively.

This evaluation is part of the 2026 Truck of the Year testing program, which assesses vehicles based on efficiency, design, safety, engineering, value, and performance for their intended uses. Eligible trucks must be either new or significantly updated.
