Latest Mazda CX-5 Prototype Spotted Navigating Urban Traffic

The SUV market continues to thrive, and Mazda is capitalizing on this trend by maintaining its popular CX-5 model alongside the newer CX-50. Last year, the CX-5 dominated the U.S. market with impressive sales of 134,088 units, making it Mazda's best-selling vehicle in the region. However, with the CX-5 nearing its ninth anniversary, a replacement is anticipated soon.

Third-Generation CX-5 Under Development

Recent sightings include a prototype of the upcoming third-generation CX-5, which has been captured on video in California by YouTuber KindelAuto. This prototype appears to feature production-quality body panels and final lighting elements. There is speculation that the new model may incorporate an electrified powertrain, as it is being evaluated against hybrid models like the Kia Sportage and Honda CR-V.

Engine Specifications

It's unlikely that the prototype is equipped with Mazda's next-generation Skyactiv-Z engine, as this advanced four-cylinder engine is set to debut in 2027. The refreshed CX-5 is expected to launch well before the introduction of the Skyactiv-Z.

Design Evolution

The design of the new CX-5 seems to take cues from the larger CX-70, moving away from the sharp lines characteristic of Mazda's Kodo design language to embrace more fluid and rounded contours. While this may appeal to some, there is a concern that the SUV might become indistinguishable among the myriad of modern crossovers.

Enhanced Practicality

Indicators suggest that the next-generation CX-5 will offer improved practicality. Enlarged second-row windows hint at a longer wheelbase and increased legroom for rear passengers. Additionally, a slightly less steep roofline suggests enhanced headroom and greater cargo capacity. Under the hood, the new model features a multi-link rear suspension, a departure from the torsion beam setup found in the CX-50.

Interior and Technology Upgrades

While the complete interior layout remains under wraps, glimpses of a substantial central infotainment screen have been noted. Mazda, which has traditionally kept screen sizes modest, appears to be adapting to consumer preferences with larger displays, as seen in the upcoming EZ-6 sedan and EZ-60 crossover.

Mazda's Strategic Focus on SUVs

SUVs, despite not being the most exciting vehicles for enthusiasts, are crucial to Mazda's business model. High-selling models like the CX-5 provide the revenue needed to support passion projects such as the Miata and potentially a rotary-engine sports car. Although Mazda remains a relatively smaller player in the global market, it continues to compete with industry giants like Toyota, which secured the top spot in global sales for the fifth consecutive year in 2024.
