Mazda May Explore a Tougher Version of Its Leading SUV
- Mazda currently does not offer a dedicated rugged SUV.
- Koichiro Yamaguchi stated the company is open to creating a more off-road-oriented SUV if buyers show enough enthusiasm.
- The CX-5's all-wheel-drive system might serve as a solid platform for such a future model.
Mazda boasts a diverse range of SUVs, stretching from the smaller CX-30 to the spacious three-row CX-90. However, the brand does not yet have a model specifically tailored for off-road adventures or the so-called soft-roader market segment.
In an interview with Australia's CarSales, CX-5 program manager Koichiro Yamaguchi acknowledged this gap and revealed that Mazda is willing to consider an off-road-focused version if customer demand justifies it.
"I pay close attention to what our customers want," Yamaguchi explained. "We want to listen carefully to market feedback and respond accordingly."
Although no official plans have been announced, Mazda is clearly contemplating the idea. Yamaguchi also pointed out that the CX-5’s sophisticated AWD system could be well-suited for a model with enhanced off-road capabilities.
Could a Rugged CX-5 Appeal to Buyers?
A tougher version of the CX-5 would align well with current market trends. Several competitors already offer outdoor-inspired trims for compact SUVs, such as the Honda CR-V TrailSport, Nissan Rogue Rock Creek, and Toyota RAV4 Woodland.
These trims generally do not transform the vehicles into serious off-road machines but add features like extra body cladding, minor suspension lifts, and rugged styling to boost their outdoor appeal. A similar CX-5 variant could increase its attractiveness without compromising its core strengths.
Mazda’s CX-5 is already a strong seller, moving over 136,000 units in 2025—up 1.7% from the previous year. Since its launch in 2011, the CX-5 has surpassed five million sales, making it Mazda's top-selling SUV so far.
