Mazda’s CX-5 SUV Hits Over Five Million Units Produced
- Mazda has surpassed five million CX-5 crossovers produced.
- This milestone makes the CX-5 Mazda’s third model to exceed five million units, alongside the Mazda323 and Mazda3.
- The all-new third-generation CX-5 is set to debut later this year in the U.S. market.
Since production began in 2011, Mazda has built over five million units of its CX-5 crossover, establishing it as the company’s top-selling vehicle worldwide. Prior to this, only the Mazda 323 and Mazda3 had reached this production milestone.
The CX-5 made its first appearance at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and quickly became Japan’s best-selling domestic crossover by 2012. Mazda celebrated the production of its one-millionth CX-5 in April 2015, before unveiling the second generation later in 2016.
The CX-5 achieved its peak sales in the U.S. in 2021 with 168,383 units sold. Although sales have softened since then, they slightly increased by 1.7% in 2025, reaching 136,335 vehicles.
Koichiro Yamaguchi, the program manager for the CX-5, expressed gratitude, stating, "We sincerely thank all our customers and supporters worldwide for their continued enthusiasm for the CX-5."
The upcoming third-generation CX-5, launching early this year, is a complete redesign. It is now 4.5 inches longer overall and also has an extended wheelbase by the same amount. Inside, it features a large touchscreen display and removes traditional buttons. Under the hood, the familiar 187-horsepower 2.5-liter engine remains, with a hybrid variant expected to arrive in 2027.
The CX-5 stands out in the crowded crossover market due to its engaging driving dynamics. Mazda’s commitment to delivering driving enjoyment has helped the CX-5 gain popularity worldwide. The automotive community will be eager to see if the third-generation model can sustain this momentum.
